Named after the Hawaiian word for “welcoming comfort”, Ho’okipa Beach Park in Maui, Hawaii, is the perfect place to enjoy some fun in the sun. The park was named by parks director Alice Johnson in the 1930’s, who wrote a popular song about this beautiful region. Located along the famous Hana Highway, the beach offers picnic facilities, observation decks, and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Guests can spend the day swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing, or sit under the cool shade of the Hau tree and enjoy exhilarating sea spray and fine salt mist that will make your skin tingle. Whatever you choose to do, a trip to this sandy shoreline is a must the next time you’re in Maui – and it’s just a 30-minute drive from the Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono! Here are some of our favorite things to do at Hookipa Beach.
Spend a Day at Hookipa Beach
See the Sea Turtles
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, also known as Honu, frequently visit Hookipa Beach and can be seen bobbing along an exposed coral reef in the water. They also often relax on the sand, but you may not realize it because they tend to look like scattered boulders! The best time of day to see the turtles is in the evening, when many Honu stroll onto the shore to rest and admire the beautiful Hawaiian sunset. All sea turtles are protected by federal and state law, so remember to be respectful of the animal and keep your distance.
Hookipa Beach is also a world-renowned destination for Maui windsurfing and boasts some of the best waves on the island’s coastline. Surfers have flocked to this beach since the 1930’s, and the Aloha Classic and Red Bull professional surfing competitions have even taken place here. We highly recommend that only experienced surfers try to the tackle this beach, as sudden afternoon winds, strong rip currents, and the shallow reef can be challenging and sometimes dangerous for beginners. Be sure to always look over Hawaii’s ocean safety tips before heading out.
Stop at Mama’s Fish House
A day at Hookipa Beach wouldn’t be complete with a visit to Mama’s Fish House. This family-owned eatery has been an area staple 1973, and for good reason; the restaurant sends its fisherman out on small boats each day, and the chefs process and serve the wild-caught fish within 24 hours. With decadent options like Tristan Island lobster tails, seared Ahi tuna, and Mama’s famous stuffed Mahi-Mahi, you’ll know you’re eating the freshest seafood money can buy!
Stay at the Old Wailuku Inn at Ulupono!

Much like Hookipa Beach, our inn knows hospitality and will provide you with a comfortable, relaxing, and memorable getaway you’ll never forget. The next morning, join us for a delicious gourmet breakfast and tell us all about your adventures. We can’t wait to see you at the beach!
